The Coffee Academics in Scotts Square shopping centre near Orchard Road is the first international outlet of the Hong Kong specialty coffee chain. Although they specialise in coffee, which I must say is good and it is listed on Buzzfeed as one of the “25 coffee shops around the world you have to see before you die”, the food – or shall I say desserts – are even better and will keep you coming back for more. They have a variety of different food on their menu from breakfasts to tacos and they also have a lot of eye-catching desserts and freshly baked cakes.
Unfortunately on the day that we were there they didn’t have their Signature TCA Egglet available as apparently their egglet machine was broken. The Signature TCA Egglet is a fairly new addition to their Singapore menu and it’s a dessert inspired by traditional Hong Kong street food – an egglet which is like an eggy waffle that is served with mango cubes, Hong Kong milk tea gelato and salted egg yolk custard sauce.
So we settled for an Academics Pancake Tower instead and gosh are we glad that we did! The pancakes were soft, fluffy and perfectly buttery. They came with a scoop of Hong Kong milk tea gelato, whipped cream and berries. Perfect mid-afternoon snack and very filling!
We also went for the Cinnamon Churros which were served with coffee gelato made from The Coffee Academics own coffee beans and Valrhona 70% chocolate fudge dipping sauce. The churros were brought to us freshly made and hot, they were light and not too doughy and sprinkled with just the right amount of cinnamon sugar. I usually prefer churros plain with just sugar but the chocolate fudge dipping sauce is soooo good that you just can’t help but keep dipping your churros in it.
The Coffee Academics has a very nice interior with different areas you can sit in including in front of the open kitchen, at the bar near the coffee brewing section and even a Japanese-style tatami area. Service at The Coffee Academics is a bit hit-and-miss, it’s polite enough but not as efficient or organised as it could be. I will definitely be back though to try the Signature TCA Egglet when their machine has been fixed and maybe some of the other food!
