House Of Rice Roll And Porridge Killiney Road Singapore

There are a lot of good food choices on Killiney Road near Somerset MRT including Real Food Cafe and Suanthai but there’s one place that I always go back to and that’s House of Rice Roll and Porridge at no. 89 Killiney Road. House of Rice Roll and Porridge serve freshly made Cantonese cheong fun (rice noodle rolls) with all types of fillings including the usual prawn, char siu (barbecued pork), scallop, etc. but they also have some unusual fillings such as abalone, eel, mango and for the brave they even have durian! I’ve tried the durian cheong fun once before as I absolutely love durian and although it was nice, it had very little durian filling. It’s served cold with sugar, crushed peanuts and sesame seeds sprinkled on top and it may sound a bit weird but it actually works well together and makes a good dessert.

I usually go for the char siu or scallop cheong fun and the cheong fun itself is always delicately thin with a good amount of filling. I would prefer the sauce to be a bit sweeter but it’s still very tasty and they give you plenty of it which is great for soaking your cheong fun in.

House of Rice Roll and Porridge also specialise in congee or Chinese porridge (as the name may give away) and they also have a variety of other small dishes including Prawn Maw Dumplings, Vegetable Spring Rolls, Fried Rice with Salted Fish, Prawn Beancurd Rolls, Chicken Fried with Apple and for the more adventurous they have Frog Legs with Black Pepper, Fried Intestine and Pig Giblets.

Fish Congee

The congee there is good, it’s well seasoned with just the right consistency and I would recommend either the Century Egg Pork Congee or Fish Congee. The Fried Rice with Salted Fish is also tasty as is the Prawn Beancurd Rolls which are light and crispy and not too oily with a juicy prawn filling. My favourite dish though is the Prawn Maw Dumplings, I always get this with a cheong fun and this is enough for either lunch or dinner. The Prawn Maw Dumplings are crunchy, packed full of prawns and served with mayonnaise on the side which goes perfectly with them.

House of Rice Roll and Porridge is a very casual restaurant, service is always very efficient and polite and it’s a great place for having a quick, cheap and delicious meal only minutes away from Orchard Road. I’ve never had to wait for a table there but it’s always busy with people stopping by to grab a bite or to pick up a takeaway. I highly recommend this place if you’re in the area or have a craving for cheong fan!
