Penang Seafood Restaurant Review Geylang Singapore

If you’re ever in the Geylang area, just a few minutes down the road from Aljunied MRT you’ll find Penang Seafood Restaurant. It may look like an old local restaurant but these are the best kind and boy do they have good food! They serve a variety of Penang specialties such as Penang Assam Laksa and Penang Fried Kway Teow as well as having a huge menu of seafood, meat, vegetable, egg, beancurd, noodle and rice dishes.

One of my favourite dishes is Char Kway Teow (Fried Kway Teow) and I personally prefer the Penang version over the Singapore version as I find it to be more flavourful and not as wet or sweet so I of course ordered a medium sized portion of the Penang Fried Kway Teow ($7.50) and my other personal favourite Chinese dish, Sweet and Sour Pork Rice ($5), both to share with the hubby.

The Sweet and Sour Pork Rice came out very quickly followed by the Penang Fried Kway Teow. You actually get a decent amount of pork considering it’s only $5 and the pork was absolutely delicious. The pork batter was light and crispy and the sauce had the perfect balance of sweet and sour. I would go as far as to say that it’s practically as good as the sweet and sour pork in Paradise Dynasty which is my favourite.

The Penang Fried Kway Teow was humongous, the portion was more like a large than a medium but we happily managed to devour it all as it was so good. It had a good amount of “wok hei” – a term I’ve learnt since living here that literally means “breath of a wok” and it’s basically the charred, smoky flavour that you get from frying the noodles at a very high temperature in a wok. It was spicy as we had requested and had a fair amount of cockles, slices of Chinese sausage and prawns in it.

We surprisingly managed to finish everything and washed it down with an ice cold glass of refreshing Homemade Lime Juice ($2.50).

Service at Penang Seafood Restaurant was very pleasant and efficient, it’s a nice casual restaurant which made me feel like I was on holiday eating in Malaysia. Even though I don’t usually go to Aljunied, I will definitely go back just to eat there or pick up a takeaway. The food is great, very good value and I’m sure the seafood there must be very good too so I’ll definitely be trying that some time!
