Opened last month, the new Pompompurin Cafe in Orchard Central shopping centre is the first to open in southeast Asia with branches already in Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong. For those who don’t know, Pompompurin is a golden retriever dog character that may not be as well known as fellow Sanrio character Hello Kitty but has grown in popularity immensely in recent times.

The cafe has a garden theme and is cutely decorated with Pompompurin pictures, stuffed toys, lamps shades, hedges and a big Pompompurin figure in the middle of the cafe together with his friends.

The menu has something for everyone with options including Spaghetti Napolitana, Taco Rice, Coconut Milk Chicken Curry, Banana & Caramel Pancakes and other kid-friendly dishes. Most of the food comes in the shape of Pompompurin and some of the dishes come with a free Pompompurin ceramic container which you can take home – these dishes are a bit more expensive though.

Some of the drinks are also decorated with Pompompurin cookies or marshmallows – so kawaii! ♫

The food at Pompompurin is not great, the pancakes I had (Bagel’s Special Pancake Tower – Bagel is Pompompurin’s squirrel friend) were dry and the different layers of sauce in-between each pancake (custard, caramel, jam and chocolate) weren’t particularly nice or there was very little of it.

I had a Love Love Hot Marshmallow Latte which is a caramel latte with marshmallows of Pompompurin and his poodle friend Macaroon. It was nice but it didn’t seem to have any caramel in it and tasted more like a normal latte.

Overall the experience at Pompompurin was fun, the service is friendly and it’s a great place for children and adults alike. It’s the kind of place that you wouldn’t go back to again for the food though, it’s more of a novelty cafe that you might visit just for the cuteness of it all. Prices are a little on the high side – my latte and pancakes came up to a total of $41.20 including GST and service but not too bad I guess for an enjoyable brunch at an adorable cafe ❤

There’s also a small area near the till at the front of the cafe where you can buy Pompompurin merchandise, for all you hardcore fans 🙂
