Stepping Out Studios Review – Free Tap Dancing Class Singapore

Tap dancing is something I’d been wanting to try for years so I was happy to find that the Stepping Out Studios dance school in City Square Mall near Farrer Park MRT offers a free tap dancing class trial every Wednesday evening for beginners. Stepping Out Studios is a small dance school on the 8th floor of City Square Mall, it only has two studios and no changing rooms, showers or lockers. There are however toilets in the shopping centre which you can use to change and freshen up and bags can be left at the side of the room during the class.

I went for their beginners tap class trial yesterday which started promptly at 7pm and lasted an hour. I pre-booked my place via the EventBrite website and arrived quite early to register however you only need to sign a form saying whether or not it’s ok for your photo to be taken during the class. There isn’t really a waiting area where you can wait for the class to start but there are chairs outside and there’s even a children’s play area if you want to take a class and leave your kid there to play. One of the women in my class was even allowed to bring her daughter to the class to wait so it’s quite a child-friendly school.

The tap class was a lot of fun, there were only around 10 people but apparently there’s usually more as it’s near Chinese New Year now so it was quieter. The teacher was really good, absolutely hilarious and explained each step clearly and corrected and helped us when needed. He was also very encouraging and helped make us feel more relaxed especially when I had my stressed face on lol. The whole class went by so quickly, we learnt quite a few of the basic tap steps and danced to some of the recent pop tunes. I enjoyed it so much that I think I’ll definitely have to go and get myself some tap shoes! The school unfortunately don’t rent out tap shoes so you have to either buy a pair or if it’s your first class and you just want to try it out then you can use normal flat shoes or trainers. According to the helpful reception staff at Stepping Out Studios there is a shop in Orchard Central shopping centre near Somerset MRT called Sonata Dancewear which sells tap shoes and they are around $60 to $100.

Stepping Out Studios only holds beginner adult tap classes on Wednesday evening but they also have intermediate and advanced level tap classes as well as other types of dance classes for both adults and children including hip-hop, k-pop, jazz and ballet. It’s $20 per class but you can get 4 classes for $60 which have to be used within 6 weeks but you’re only allowed to take one class a week (i.e. you can’t take two or more different classes in a week). Alternatively you can pay $120 to take as many classes as you would like in a month.
