Suju Japanese Restaurant Review – Mandarin Gallery Orchard Road

Suju Japanese Restaurant Mandarin Gallery Orchard Road

Described by one of my Japanese friends as the best Japanese restaurant in Singapore, I just knew I had to go there and try it for myself. Suju Japanese restaurant in the Mandarin Gallery shopping centre on Orchard Road is an upmarket Japanese restaurant, prices can be quite steep at dinner time but during lunch they have good value sets or ‘Teishoku’ where you get a main dish of your choice accompanied with rice, miso soup and pickles.

They have a Suju Plate Set ($27) where you get 6 different small dishes with rice, miso soup, pickles and a dessert. Each of the small dishes that we were given including mackerel, fried chicken, mentaiko (cod roe) and vegetables were simple and tasty – the kind of food you would get if you had a meal at your Japanese friend’s home. The ingredients that they use to cook with such as the miso and shoyu (soy sauce) are all their own brand ingredients from their headquarters in Nagano and the fish is selected and flown in fresh from the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. My friend had been raving about the rice here and sure enough it was a very good Japanese rice, perfectly cooked with a slight sticky and chewy texture. The rice in Suju is actually sourced from the Nagano prefecture in Japan and is cooked in a brass kettle which is supposed to give the rice a better texture. You can have as many refills of rice as you want although one bowl is probably filling enough. The miso soup was made from red miso and it had a very deep, earthy flavour – perfect accompaniment to the rice and other dishes.

The dessert which was a crème caramel of sorts was a let down. The caramel was sickly sweet that I only managed two small mouthfuls of it.

Suju is a small, cozy restaurant and the service is the typical polite service you’d find in a Japanese restaurant here. Most of the restaurant’s patrons are Japanese which is a good indication of the quality of the Japanese food that you get here. Food here is simple and honest with a focus on quality ingredients which is why I’ll be back again to try some of their other lunch sets.
