Sumire Yakitori House Restaurant Review – Bugis Singapore

Sumire Yakitori House Bugis

Sumire is a cosy yakitori restaurant situated on the outside of Bugis Junction shopping mall close to Bugis MRT. It doesn’t serve up yakitori like the yakitori-ya in Japan where customers sit at a counter and are served yakitori straight from the charcoal grills but the yakitori is nearly just as tasty cooked on their electric grills and brought to you by one of their efficient staff. It’s not the kind of place where you’d take a date as the tables are packed closely together which hardly makes for a romantic setting, however it’s great for grabbing a bite after work and a couple of beers and for bigger groups you could probably nab one of their comfy booths.

Sumire have a daily happy hour which gladly lasts more than an hour from 11.30am until 7pm where a pint of Sapporo Premium Draft beer is only $5.90, so we got there at around 6pm so that we could catch the last hour of it.

We ordered several different types of yakitori including chicken skin, chicken tail, aubergine with chicken miso paste and chicken meatballs for men lol 🙂

If you’re wondering what chicken meatballs for men are, they are basically the same as the women’s version except you get two large meatballs per skewer as opposed to 3 regular sized meatballs. Since there were just two of us dining we thought it would be easier to share 🙂 We got two different types of meatballs – some with teriyaki sauce and mayo and some with teriyaki sauce, mayo and cheese. The meatballs were juicy and very moreish, some of the best Japanese meatballs I’ve had; the mayonnaise and cheese made them all the more delectable.

The other yakitori we tried were also good and we also tried the scallop with mentai mayo which unfortunately was very small (most of it was mayo) as well as chewy due to overcooking.

One of their popular dishes is the deep fried whole garlic with sumo miso sauce so we decided to give it a try. Although it sounds strange and you’ll probably have to use a lot of mouthwash afterwards, the garlic although oily and a bit tedious to peel is actually quite tasty dipped in the sumo miso sauce. If you’re wondering what sumo miso sauce is, it’s apparently miso that was only meant for sumo wrestlers to eat in the past but in this case it was just a spicy miso sauce.

To finish off we had the black sesame ice cream and homemade milk pudding; the ice cream had a lovely strong black sesame flavour and the pudding was light and creamy.

Overall the food in Sumire was really tasty with a wide selection to choose from in the menu and the service was good although service with a smile couldn’t hurt? The only complaint is that I was served beer in a chipped glass but this was promptly replaced with a fresh new pint.
