Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice Restaurant Review Singapore Marina Square Mall

I’ve been to Wee Nam Kee on several occasions, mostly when people come to visit from abroad, as it’s been highly recommended in many guidebooks as one of the best chicken rice restaurants in Singapore. Personally I prefer Jew Kit Hainanese Chicken Rice but Wee Nam Kee comes a close second.

The branch in Marina Square Mall is big and although busy, you usually only need to wait a little while for a table during peak times. They have the usual chicken rice sets on their menu with either steamed, roasted or soya sauce chicken as well as Chinese soup, noodles, rice, seafood, meat and vegetable dishes, although I’ve only ever had the chicken rice there.

Chicken Rice at Wee Nam Kee is $4.80 and comes with soup or you can go for a set which is $7 with either soup and a plate of vegetables or dumplings in soup. I usually go for a set as for only $2.20 extra you get a decent sized portion of stir fried baby kai lan which would normally cost $8 for a dish that is slightly bigger if you went a la carte or you get five large pork dumplings if you choose to get the chicken rice set with dumplings.

Steamed Chicken

Both the roasted and steamed chicken is good at Wee Nam Kee although I prefer the roasted chicken as the skin is slightly crispy and more flavourful. The chicken meat is usually juicy and tender but on occasions it has been slightly dry. I haven’t tried the soya sauce chicken there so I can’t comment on it. The rice has a good chicken flavour and the stir fried baby kai lan is cooked with sweet soya sauce, oyster sauce and garlic. The kai lan is always perfectly cooked and still crunchy, delicious with crispy onions sprinkled on top. The dumplings are really good too and are generously stuffed with well seasoned minced pork and the soup is a light chicken broth.

Condiments are available on each table including chilli sauce, soya sauce and ginger paste which go nicely with the chicken.

Service at Wee Nam Kee is usually helpful and efficient and food is served very quickly although sometimes there’s the odd service mishap where you’re not served your rice with the chicken and you let the waitress know and she replies with an abrupt “later” but that “later” never comes ^^;
