Slightly hidden behind the facade of an old Chinese school right next to Thian Hock Keng temple, Chong Wen Ge Cafe is a Peranakan cafe sharing the same building as the Peranakan Tiles Gallery and Singapore Musical Box Museum.
Although located right in the heart of the CBD amidst the crowds of workers, there is a quiet tranquillity about this place with seating both inside and outside under a Chinese pavilion.
The menu is simple with traditional local delights including Nyonya Curry Chicken, Nyonya Laksa and Nyonya Mee Siam and they also have a good selection of local drinks. Orders are placed at the till and you’re given a buzzer so you can come and collect your food when it’s ready.
I’ve had the Nyonya Laksa ($10.80) there which was good although be prepared to wait for a while whilst they make it. The laksa soup was thick and full of flavour, definitely one of the better ones that I’ve had in Singapore.
They have a selection of freshly made Nyonya Kueh which is $1.50 for a piece or you can choose 5 pieces and 2 drinks (any drink below $2.40) for $10.50. All the kueh that I’ve tried there has been very good, I would say maybe even better than ones you would find in most local cake shops.
Chong Wen Ge Cafe is definitely a place worth visiting for an authentic Nyonya lunch or just to whittle away an afternoon over a cup of local coffee and some kueh in pleasant surroundings.
