Nanyang Old Coffee Review Chinatown Singapore

Cheap and cheerful, Nanyang Old Coffee is one of my favourite places to go for a quick meal or snack. The branch in Chinatown serves local favourites such as Nyonya Laksa, Bak Kut Teh, Nyonya Curry Chicken and Nasi Lemak as well as Kaya Butter Toast, Chee Cheong Fan, Nyonya Bak Chang, Soon Kueh and Bau if you fancy something lighter.

I love the traditional decor of Nanyang Old Coffee and it’s a nice change from all the international coffee chains around Singapore. The branch in Chinatown is pretty big and is split into two rooms, one of which has a counter from which you order and collect your food and drinks from and the other has a small shop where you can purchase Nanyang Old Coffee products such as their coffee and kaya. Both rooms are spacious with plenty of seating so you can comfortably relax there over a cup of their award winning Singaporean coffee. It’s never too busy either, even on weekdays during lunch hour, so you can always easily find a table. If you have friends or relatives visiting, it’s a great place to take them to experience some local food culture as well as pick up some souvenirs.

If you want a good cup of Singaporean coffee then Nanyang Old Coffee is the place to go. Their coffee beans are roasted the traditional way with a small amount of caramel sugar and butter or margarine and the resulting coffee is full bodied and has a complex flavour. Their Ice Blended Milk Tea ($2.20) is also nice, not too sweet and maybe not as strong as I would like it but nevertheless refreshing as it can get quite hot sitting in the cafe with just an overhead fan. The Pork Minced Mushroom Chee Cheong Fan ($2.90) there is tasty, the cheong fan noodle is delicate and soft and is covered in a sweet and savoury sauce with minced pork and mushroom. Their Soon Kueh is very good value at only $1 a piece and is very big, generously stuffed with turnip and the dumpling skin is not too thick. Delicious with sweet soy sauce and chilli!
