Joyden Treasures Restaurant Review – Leisure Park Kallang

I was around the Kallang area last weekend and was craving for some dim sum so I was really happy to find Joyden Treasures which is a Chinese restaurant in Leisure Park Kallang shopping centre that pays homage to the unique Chinese heritage cuisine of Singapore and serves hard-to-find traditional specialties as well as Hong Kong style and local dim sum during lunchtime.

They have a range of typical steamed, fried and baked dim sum on their menu, cheong fun and congee as well as a selection of local style dim sum dishes. We chose to get the Steamed Imperial Prawn Dumplings / Har Gao ($4.50), Steamed Shrimp Siew Mai with Fish Roe ($4.50), Steamed Salted Egg Custard Buns ($4.50), Teochew Soon Kueh ($4.20), Golden Chrysanthemum Imperial Seafood Dumplings ($4.50) and Prawn Cheong Fun ($5). You’re also given some unappetising looking pickles on the table which you’re charged $2 for even if you don’t touch it.

We marked our order down on the order sheet, handed it to the waitress and within minutes our Prawn Cheong Fun came out. The Prawn Cheong Fun has got to be one of the best I’ve ever had. The prawns were huge and juicy, the cheong fun itself wasn’t as delicate as the ones in cheong fun specialty restaurant House Of Rice Roll And Porridge, but it was still very good and the sauce was perfectly sweet and salty.

The Har Gao too was very good, the prawns were again huge, very fresh and steamed to perfection and the dumpling skin was delicate.

The Golden Chrysanthemum Imperial Seafood Dumpling is not something I’d come across before but it’s basically like a prawn cake wrapped in a spring roll wrapper and deep fried. It was crispy and not too oily and was delicious dipped in the chilli sauce available on our table.

The Siew Mai was good but average in comparison to the other dim sum that we tried in Joyden Treasures. They weren’t as big and juicy as the Har Gao but they had a decent amount of pork and prawn filling.

The Teochew Soon Kueh were huge and fresh, maybe even a little better than what I’ve tried so far in small shops and stalls selling it in Singapore. The skin was perhaps a bit too thick but it was generously stuffed with plenty of turnip, mushrooms and dried prawns.

We finished with the Steamed Salted Egg Custard Buns as a sweet ending to our perfect dim sum lunch. The salted egg custard filling was thick, creamy and sweet with just a hint of saltiness and the bun itself wasn’t too thick.

Joyden Treasures is a pretty big restaurant and can accommodate a lot of people, perfect for big gatherings with family or friends. It’s also a nice place to escape some of the crowds in other Chinese restaurants as it was fairly quiet when we were there for Sunday lunch. Judging on the food though I have no idea why it’s not packed, perhaps due to it’s location. Service is excellent, very polite and efficient and prices of the dim sum dishes are very affordable.
