Laurent’s Cafe By Laurent Bernard Chocolatier Review – Orchard Road Singapore

Tucked away in a quiet corner in the basement of Robinsons department store on Orchard Road, Laurent’s Cafe by French artisan chocolatier Laurent Bernard serves all day brunch, sandwiches, salads, soups, pasta, meat dishes and desserts as well as breakfast and dinner sets and a $10 kid’s menu.

Open early every day at 9am, I went there for a leisurely breakfast with the hubby last Saturday having reserved a table on Chope. Robinsons only opens at 10.30am so if you go to Laurent’s Cafe before then, you can go directly to the basement of Robinsons by using the staircase outside or the side entrance on Cairnhill Road.

The cafe itself is quaint and absolutely dead at 9.30am in the morning apart from a few cleaners and Robinsons security staff that were hanging around outside. Service was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive and we were the only ones there which was great! There was a nice selection of cakes at the counter on the side and although Laurent’s Cafe is famed for it’s chocolate soufflé and hot chocolate, I decided to go for a Homemade Waffle ($14) and a Latte ($6.50) and hubby went for a Nordic Breakfast ($22).

My Homemade Waffle which was a freshly made Liege waffle, came with fresh cream, strawberries, raspberries, blueberry compote and a scoop of ice cream which I could choose from the flavours available on the day. I chose to have the chocolate ice cream since I love Laurent Bernard chocolates and have purchased them maybe one too many a time from Takashimaya food hall ^^; The waffle was light and crispy and delicious with the berries and cream. The flavour of the chocolate ice cream was good although the texture of the ice cream was not particularly smooth and creamy and was a bit icy. The latte I had was ok too, not the best coffee but it was strong with a dash of steamed milk and came with a mini chocolate muffin on the side which was a little on the stale side.

Hubby enjoyed his Nordic breakfast which consisted of smoked salmon on crusty wholewheat Nordic bread with sour cream and dill, a small rocket salad and two perfectly cooked sunny side up eggs sprinkled with fresh parsley. The breakfast was tasty but the amount of smoked salmon given was not nearly as generous at what was shown on the picture in the menu and perhaps not really worth the $22 price tag. Overall though we had a nice quiet breakfast there and a spot of shopping in Robinsons afterwards 🙂
