Bistro is a self-service style restaurant located in the huge ToTT kitchenware store in the Sime Darby Centre on Dunearn Road in Bukit Timah. They have a pretty big menu including different types of pasta, some local dishes, breakfast/brunch items, desserts as well as snacks, salads and soups if you only want a light meal.
I went there last Sunday around lunchtime, taking advantage of the free Downtown Line in celebration of the opening of the new Downtown Line 2 and took the MRT to King Albert Park MRT station. The ToTT store is just across the road from the station via the overhead walkway.
My friend and I ordered our food first at the till – we decided to share a Sugar-Dusted French Toast with Strawberries, Truffle Fries with Duo Dips and a Grilled Halibut on Crab Meat Puree which was a special main from their Christmas menu. The French Toast and Grilled Halibut both came with a free drink, either coffee, tea or free flow soft drinks.
After ordering we found a table and within seconds of us sitting down, our fries were already brought to us. The fries which were actually crinkle cut chips didn’t have much of a truffle flavour and were sprinkled with red pepper powder which I found to be a little strange. It was a huge portion, enough for two people and they were warm but not crunchy and weren’t particularly good. They came with store-bought chili sauce and mayonnaise dips.
Soon after we were served the French Toast and Grilled Hallibut. The French Toast which was supposed to come with strawberries came instead with a few tiny pieces of orange segments, very disappointing and not worth what we paid for it. The French Toast itself was very thick and had very little egg on it so it was basically just like eating bread with icing sugar and maple syrup.
Luckily the Grilled Hallibut was delicious. The fish was cooked to perfection and the crab meat puree which was a bit like a Singaporean chilli crab sauce complimented it well.
The self-service latte from the machine that I had with my lunch was also surprisingly good.
Overall the lunch that we had was ok with the halibut saving what could have been a disastrous meal. The food in Bistro is a bit hit-and-miss so if I went back there again I would probably go for another fish dish. The service is quick and efficient and the restaurant is not too crowded and it’s great if you want to have a quick meal after shopping in ToTT as there’s not much else around that area.
