Elemen Restaurant Review – Millenia Walk Singapore

Elemen is a vegetarian restaurant with two branches in Singapore, one of which I went to for dinner on Tuesday in the Millenia Walk shopping mall next to Promenade station. Their menu which has recently been updated with new dishes comprises of salads, soups, mains and desserts stemming from Japanese, Chinese and Italian cuisine. They offer a 5 course set for only $23.80++ where you get a starter, a salad or soup, a main, dessert and drink. There’s also an 8 course set for $32.80++ which is the same as the 5 course set except you get both a salad and soup and you also get some Rosemary Breadsticks with Raspberry Yoghurt Sauce and an apple cider. It’s actually very similar to Sufood if you’ve ever eaten there before although I would say that I prefer the food in Elemen. All the items on the menu are also available a la carte.

I got the 5 course set and chose to have a Double-boiled Maca Soup rather than a salad, the Spicy Shitake with Purple Rice Roll for the main, the Raspberry Vanilla Dome for dessert and a Lemongrass Latte. Each table has a tablet on it which you can use to place your order.

As soon as we placed our order, within minutes The Elemen Appetiser was given to each of us as our starter. The waiter explained that we should start eating from the right-hand side of the plate. The appetiser on the right is shitake mushroom with edamame in oyster sauce, the one in the middle is black sesame tofu with sesame sauce and the one on the left is cherry tomato in vinegar. They were all nice and I liked the tofu in particular as I love sesame and the sauce reminded me of Japanese sesame dressing.

I wanted to get the Double-boiled Maca Soup as I’d been reading about the superfood maca and it has some interesting benefits such as increasing energy, stamina, athletic performance and memory so I wanted to try it. The Elemen menu says that the soup promotes anti-ageing too so that’s always a plus! 🙂 The soup had a refreshing taste and is like a Chinese herbal soup if you’ve ever had one. It doesn’t taste too strong like some herbal soups can and besides maca there were also slices of ginseng in it. The taste was fairly pleasant and you’ll feel better after drinking it knowing that you’ve just consumed a load of nutrients. It’s also supposed to control mood swings and be good for the digestive system.

My friend’s Quinoa Salad:

The Spicy Shitake with Purple Rice Roll was very tasty. It was made from delicious purple rice and had crunchy bits of tempura, carrot and cucumber in it. Each piece was topped with shitake, red chilli and red pepper with a bit of mayonnaise and soy sauce. The combination of everything worked really well together and although it had small pieces of chilli in it, it wasn’t too spicy.

Sizzling Quinoa Brown Rice a friend had:

Salted Egg Pasta:

The Raspberry Vanilla Dome is a sponge cake with vanilla ice cream that is coated in a raspberry puree. I found the sponge to be quite dense and hard as if it had just come out of the freezer and the dome came with a crumb on the side that was also quite hard and strangely had bits of kale in it which I actually quite liked. The dessert however is not something I would order again.

Coconut Infused Jelly with Watermelon Sorbet:

The Lemongrass Latte is a hot decaffeinated milk tea flavoured with lemongrass. I found it to taste a bit artificial, there was a strong lemongrass flavour but it was a bit too sweet for my liking.

Overall I had a pleasant meal, there were some hits and misses with the food but it was generally good. Service here is efficient and helpful, food comes out quickly and the layout of the restaurant is nice. I’ll probably be back when one of my vegetarian friends come to visit or if I want to have a healthy meal.
