The Manhattan Bar in the Regent Hotel near Orchard Road, recently voted as one of the world’s 50 best bars, is a sleek and luxurious bar and definitely one of the nicest bars I’ve been to in Singapore or anywhere for that matter. This New York inspired bar is dark and seductive with elegant décor and polished service, maybe a little too attentive but not to the point where it’s uncomfortable. It also houses the world’s first in-hotel barrel-ageing room.
I met a friend there for pre-dinner drinks last week and we got there early in time for their “Violet Hour” which is from 5pm – 7pm every weekday. Violet Hour entitles you to a free welcome cocktail and a Raines Law gourmet sandwich with every cocktail purchased. The cocktail menu is divided into Manhattan Island’s five districts and consists of classic and forgotten cocktails which cost around $23 on average. The welcome cocktail we received was called the Violet Fizz which somehow reminded me of diluted cough syrup. It wasn’t bad and was actually fairly strong although very small but it was free so can’t complain! A bowl of highly addictive paprika flavoured popcorn was also served alongside it to munch on.
We both started off with Uptown Girl cocktails which was a chamomile infused cocktail with Death’s Door gin, St. Germain elderflower, champagne. fresh lemon, sugar and egg white. It was light and refreshing and the complimentary Raines Law sandwich although only really a finger sized sandwich was delicious with toasted bread, walnuts, mayo and ham.
After finishing our Uptown Girl cocktails, we decided to stay for another drink and this time I tried a cocktail called The Passionista which contained Ferrand 1840 Cognac, house-made pineapple gomme, Ferrand dry curacao, fresh passionfruit and champagne and came in a sugar rimmed glass.
On requesting the bill I was promptly presented with a complimentary slice of chocolate mousse cake with “Happy Birthday Stephanie” written on the plate! What a surprise! It was actually my birthday last month but I had been back in London so my friend who I hadn’t seen since before my birthday had requested this for me! <3 The chocolate mousse slice was absolutely divine, rich and creamy with a crunchy hazelnut base. A great end to a perfect evening at the Manhattan Bar 🙂
