Cake Spade – maybe a bit of a tacky name – is by no means a tacky café. Moved from it’s original location in the Orchid Hotel, it now has a bigger space on Tanjong Pagar road just nearby. This cute cafe houses the many cakes that it is known for including cheesecakes, chocolate cakes and many more.
According to the staff that was serving me when I was there the other day, their Mango Tofu Cheesecake, Strawberry Tofu Cheesecake and their chocolate cakes are the most popular. I decided on a slice of the Victoria Sponge ($6.20) and my friend got the very last piece of the Mississippi S’mores Cake ($7.80) plus coffees to wash them down with.
The Victoria Sponge was ok, the sponge was a little dry but there was lots of cream to compensate for that. It would be nice if it had a layer of jam too like a traditional Victoria Sponge. It was a light cake so it was perfect as I’d just had lunch. The latte I had was not bad too. The Mississippi S’mores Cake is basically a chocolate fudge cake with melted marshmallow on top. It was ok too but a bit too sweet for my liking and had crunchy sugary bits in it that I didn’t really like.
Service at Cake Spade is good, the staff are very helpful in explaining the different cakes. Orders are placed at the counter first and then they bring your cakes and drinks to your table. The café itself is small and cozy and seems to be popular with office workers nearby as it was pretty busy even on a Thursday afternoon. I will be back again to try out their Red Velvet Cake as they had sold out already when I was there and only had Red Velvet Cheesecake available. They take orders for whole cakes too which would be great for birthday parties, etc.
