Plain Vanilla Bakery Review – Tiong Bahru Singapore

Plain Vanilla Bakery Tiong Bahru Singapore

I’m so excited to have finally found a great cupcake place in Singapore! Exploring the Tiong Bahru neighbourhood yesterday I stumbled upon the Plain Vanilla Bakery on Yong Siak Street which not only serves cupcakes in several different mouth-watering flavours including Red Velvet, Salted Caramel and Chocolate Hazelnut to name but a few but they also have a range of cakes, tarts, brownies and cookies.

Or if you’re in the mood for something savoury then they have salads, sandwiches, quiches and a few breakfast and brunch items on the menu. Their drinks menu is also fairly extensive with a range of coffees, teas, cold pressed juices, fruit coolers and fruit smoothies available.

They even have an area in their shop where they have cookbooks and cool items for the home on sale.

As I was there quite late in the afternoon, a lot of their cakes and tarts had already sold out so I decided on a salted caramel cupcake ($3.90) and a matcha latte ($7) as well as a double chocolate chip chocolate for takeaway ($3.50).

They have a room next-door to the bakery with some communal tables where you can enjoy your freshly baked treats or there are also picnic tables outside where you can sit on the artificial grass and pretend like you’re having a picnic in a park (this area is only around till the 28th August).

The salted caramel cupcake was divine, the sponge was moist and was not too sweet or bland. However the buttercream was what made this cupcake. It had a strong caramel flavour, wasn’t overly sweet as you may find on a lot of cupcakes elsewhere, it had a hint of saltiness and when eaten together with the sponge it created the perfect balance of flavour.

The matcha latte was nice but definitely not one of the best I’ve had. It’s not as bitter or as strong as I would normally like due to the fact that it doesn’t contain much matcha powder and the menu said that it would be sweetened with brown sugar which I assumed would be Japanese brown sugar (kuromitsu) which has a stronger flavour compared to normal brown sugar but unfortunately it was just normal sugar. It was still good though but the amount that you get is very little – not even the size of a tall cup in Starbucks.

The double chocolate chip cookie that I got for takeaway turned out to not be a double chocolate chip one as I’d asked for but was a regular chocolate chip cookie instead. It was quite nice but I was hoping it would be the very soft chewy kind which it unfortunately wasn’t.

Anyway I will definitely be back to try more of their cupcakes, they sell boxes of 6 for $22 and I’ve just realised that they have a branch in the clothing shop In Good Company in Ion shopping centre which is just near me so I’ll be checking that out soon!
